I’ve been playing this game for ~9hrs now and am about 20% complete. My goal is not to complete it as quickly as possible, but rather to do as much as possible – the side missions, the buddy missions, pretty much every mission there is.
The story behind the game is pretty solid, although it might be a bit cliched. You are on a mission to stop the jackal from supplying weapons and pretty much fueling a war. 20% into the game and all I have are a set of tapes the jackal recorded. This might be because I’m focusing on the side missions more than the main story line missions.
The buddy system in the game is pretty cool. You meet some characters along the way and they help you out when you’re in need. Say you get shot down during a gun fight, you will find yourself revived and defended by which ever buddy is ready for you. You are also able to go to them to help them out with missions they are on (buddy missions).
What I enjoy about this game is the vast environment and your ability to pretty much go anywhere. Take a sniper’s rifle and a good vantage point and you can easily pick off the enemy one at a time from a safe distance. Most games have environments which are just there. You can not interact with them, destroy them or use them to your advantage.
One thing I have noticed people asking a lot about is the Malaria medicine you constantly have to take. When you start out you are thrown into a gun fight and are stricken by the disease (pesky mosquitoes :/). You then get some medication from a priest in return for favors. The medicine does run out though and you are not able to go get some whenever you want (at least not as far as I am in the game yet). Instead, when you do run out you are rescued by the priest in a similar fashion to how your buddies help you out. The first time I ran out I was taken back to the church in the center of the map and asked to take some papers to a friend of the priest. The friend then tops you up and you’re ready to go. I’m not quite sure what happens after this (you’re cured maybe?) and while I know I can Google it to find out, I don’t want to ruin the game for myself.
I’m yet to enjoy the online action the game has to offer, but will probably give it a go once I’m done with the story. So far I really like the game and seeing as I’m playing it in 2009, it’s my number 1 game for the year so far.
