Flickr Adds Video Support!

Flickr has jumped on the video bandwagon with sites like YouTube and Revver.

Video! Video! Video! The rumours are true and “soon” is now. We’re thrilled to introduce video on Flickr. If you’re a pro member, you can now share videos up to 90 glorious seconds in your photostream.

90 seconds? While this might seem like an arbitrary limit, we thought long and hard about how video would complement the flickrverse. If you’ve memorized the Community Guidelines, you know that Flickr is all about sharing photos that you yourself have taken. Video will be no different and so what quickly bubbled up was the idea of “long photos,” of capturing slices of life to share.

See more about it on their Video Help Files; or on their Blog.

Joost: Falling Apart

Written by fx on April 6, 2008 – 10:00 am

Joost has announced a major restructure of its service and goals - moving to supply its goods to the US only. This comes with news that media and sports companies simply would not sell it global rights to their content; understandable given they usually sell them on a country basis.

Unfortunately, I think Joost had what it would have taken if only the larger media houses had been willing to try something new. Techcrunch’s opinion is somewhat harsher –

“Set up by Skype founders Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, Joost offered much promise, but has failed to deliver anything unique at a time when online video became the hottest vertical on the web. The restructure cant hurt, but with ongoing intense competition, Joost may well be on borrowed time.”
